On a bright, sunny Thursday morning, you could catch a glimpse of a large group of seniors dancing at a coffee shop. Passersby would turn their heads, curious about the lively action they were missing. Empower Ageing organized a delightful “Sing and Stretch” event at the Kopitiam Food Shop, located at 90 Boon Lay Place, Savoy Theatre, alongside the Boon Lay Community Club. The event saw over 60 seniors, aged 55 and above, coming together for a morning of music, movement, and merriment.
Empower Ageing is a local charity with a mission to “Make Ageing Well Possible”. They created the Kopitiam Pop Up initiative because they believe many seniors don’t visit community centers or places “made for seniors,” and hence, the team brings their activities to where the seniors are — kopitiams, our “centers without walls”.
The “Sing and Stretch” event ran from 10 am to 11:30 am and was designed to be easily accessible for seniors, with a first-come, first-served registration system. Irene, the enthusiastic volunteer instructor, led the seniors through a series of engaging stretches and joyful songs. Her warmth and energy were infectious, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and fun. The seniors actively participated, following Irene’s lead, singing along to familiar tunes, and stretching their bodies in gentle, rhythmic movements.
The kopitiam was buzzed with laughter, music, and lively interactions among the participants. The setting provided a nostalgic and comfortable environment, reminiscent of traditional coffee shops that hold a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans.
Empower Ageing’s initiative to host this event in Boon Lay is part of their broader mission to enhance the quality of life for seniors through meaningful engagement and activities. By participating in Empower Ageing’s events, senior residents foster a sense of community and support.
We are excited to share that Empower Ageing will be hosting more events like this and we warmly invite you all to join in the fun! Stay tuned for updates on their future activities and find out how you can get involved in bringing joy and vitality to our senior community.
